The rock was from a previous assignment. The 1:1 model was used by carving styrofoam into the general shape of the reference rock. Joint compound was then used to cover the styrofoam both to get ride of its rough texture and to sculpt it into a shape closer to the rock. After the joint compound had set, the model was painted.
The chair is made entirely out of cardboard (both sheet and tubing) and hot glue. It has not yet been sat upon by someone too heavy for it.
Finding a way to incorporate the rock into the design was the hardest part of creating the chair. The rock is able to balance in its spot in many different positions.
